PANELS
Saturday 9/8/2007 @ Mission Theater and Pub
1624 NW Glisan St (Map) 503-223-4527 Wristband or $5.00 at the door.
The first two panels, set to happen immediately following the screening of About A Son seek to answer some of the practical questions pertaining to how to navigate today's music industry. The CD Question It's your CD. What do you do with it now? We've all done it. Built that home studio. Recorded and pressed our CD's in the basement, but when is it time to step up to the pro studio, and maybe that producer? How do you mix and match both home and pro? And once you've got the finished product, then what? Just sell it at shows, or self-release while going after a record label? How about digital distribution, licensing, and promotion? When does the quality of the recording impact your distribution options and, ultimately, your future? Confirmed panelists: Paul Anthony (founder/CEO, Rumblefish) Eric Elbogen (Artist, Say Hi To Your Mom) Tim Ellis (Musician, Owner/Producer, Kung Fu Bakery Recording) Michele Flannery (Manager, YouTube Music) Wes Howerton (Director of Radio Promotion/Tour Marketing, Barsuk Records) Dylan Magierek (Co-owner, engineer, producer, Badman Recording Co and Type Foundry Studio) The Band Question It's your band, but when does it become too much to handle by yourself? Who do you get to help you and what are they suppose to do for you? Despite declining sales and downsized major labels, the music business seems bigger than ever. More and more boutique companies, DIY startups and managers are coming out of the woodwork, promising big results and (sometimes) getting them. But how do you navigate the masses? When is it time to look for outside help, and what can you expect of your manager, your booker, your publicist, etc. And how can you ensure you keep control of your art? If you're going it alone, can you really swing for the fences, or is there a glass ceiling of sorts for the self-booked, self-managed band? Confirmed panelists: Ben Dickey (Manager, Spoon) Amy Maxwell (Manager, Patrick Lamb) Dawn Pierson (Agent Assistant--Big Shot Touring) Johnny Beach (Talent Buyer, Bowery Ballroom) Matt Wright (Manager, Blitzen Trapper; Publicist, Matt Wright PR) The final panel is meant to be more of a town hall meeting, and seeks to answer the more philosophical questions pertaining to the state of independent music. The Big Question What is DIY now? How has it changed and where is it headed? Kurt Cobain and Nirvana have been lionized as The Group that brought indie music to the masses. For better or worse, their story had a huge ripple effect in the mainstream. Over the last fifteen years, changes in technology and consequent changes in the music industry have democratized the music industry further and further, until it seems like everyone is creating and releasing music. Are the DIY and the mainstream moving towards the center where relative success resides? This panel will discuss how some of the Northwest's best have navigated the sea changes of the last fifteen years -- how they've changed (or refused to change) and how they feel about the continuing evolution of their own music scenes. Lastly, the question of musical integrity: how do we keep it intact when it seems the only way to cut through the noise is to compromise it? Confirmed panelists: Ben London (NARAS Pacific Northwest Chapter, Executive Director) Steve Fisk (Musician/Producer/Engineer) Connie Wohn (Music/Event Promoter) Maggie Vail (Vice President, Kill Rock Stars) *MORE TO BE ANNOUNCED* Brought to you in partnership with SPECTRE Entertainment Group and the Musicians' Union Local 99. |
